I recently attended a One Billion Rising event in Big Rapids Michigan which was put on by the social work program at Ferris State University in collaboration withW.I.S.E. One Billion Rising is a big deal to me, as a woman and a survivor of abuse; as well as a facilitator of Red Tent. I have been trying to get to an event to support this movement for the last couple of years, and was very excited to be able to do so finally.
Hopefully next year Red Tent West Michigan will be able to collaborate with W.I.S.E. and Every Womans Place and create a larger event, one that get’s more recognition and makes some noise, ushering in even more awareness and change here in West Michigan and adding to the global change. The event was joined by The Secret Bellydancers, which is a belly-dance troupe here in Muskegon led by Lisa Lanae Edwards Lohman. This troupe of talented and beautiful women often dance for charity, and I am blessed to be friends and Red Tent sisters with some of them. Another friend of mine Eric Durkee (who is an amazing drummer) brought his skill, drums, and equipment to provide the sound and the beats for this event. One of my favorite parts of the evening was the audience participation.
We have, coming up very quickly, our tee shirt design contest. This Saturday, at our next Red Tent Temple, we will be voting on our favorite piece of art for our tee shirt fundraiser. The winner will be announced here, on facebook, and on our website. The sales of the tee shirts will raise money for our upcoming Womens Empowerment Expo, and if we sell enough, we will also be funding our Traveling Red Tent. Which brings me to my next announcement.
We are working on getting to several different events throughout the year for our traveling Red Tent, whether it is just a vendors booth, or an actual Red Tent Temple for an entire weekend; our goal is to empower women through the Red Tent, and share the vision of “A Red Tent in every village, town, and city”. We are going to be at Green Day in Ionia, Michigan April 11-12 2015 with our very first Traveling Red Tent booth. This event will be taking place at several locations around Ionia. For more information go to email@example.com. In August we are going to be at Wolf Run Wildlife and Spiritual Sanctuary for their annual harvest festival. I cannot wait to see where else we go! We have something fun in the works for a trans national event coming up this summer, with more information to come at a later time.
Our upcoming Red Tent Temples are promising to be amazing. Our next one is Feb. 21st and we will be discussing Sacred Sexuality, and the talk is being led by Christina Flier. Our March Temple is a collaboration of Marsha Smith and myself. We will be talking about healing our sexuality, topping it off with a trance dance, with the goal of becoming more in touch and comfortable with primal feminine energy; The energy of creation. I will make a blog post on this subject with more detail later.
We are also beginning to do sweat lodge with some of our sisters. I will be going to the next one coming up in March. I cannot wait, so much cleansing needs to happen for all of us. If you are in the area and are interested in sweating in a sweet medicine lodge with sisters (and your a woman), email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will send you the contact information.
